Detroit is full of surprises and the McGregor Memorial Conference Center is one of the best.
You could drive the streets of the Motor City and never see this masterpiece of modern architecture. Tucked away in the heart of the Wayne State University campus, no roads pass by the building.
We chose this space because it is so unique. The white marble and teak wood interior are lit mostly by a glass ceiling. Outside, recently restored reflecting pools form a courtyard unlike any other in the city.
Architect Minoru Yamasaki earned the praise of the architecture world when the McGregor Memorial Conference Center was completed in 1958. That attention helped bring about his most well-known project: New York's World Trade Center towers.
Yamasaki's work on the Wayne State campus helped set new trends for twentieth century architecture. This year, the National Park Service recognized the significance of the McGregor Memorial Conference Center by adding it to their list of National Historic Landmarks.
